A son’s struggle: From despair to hope

As the sole caregiver to both of his ailing parents, Rahul found himself in an extremely difficult situation. His mother, Gita Das (name changed to protect patient privacy), was suffering from a lesion on her spine, and initial scans revealed that she had carcinoma. The doctors Rahul had consulted with advised him to seek further treatment for his mother in Varanasi.

Rahul was left feeling helpless as travelling to another city was next to impossible. Doing so would mean leaving behind his father, who was still recovering after suffering from a brain haemorrhage. Deeply troubled and desperate to find a solution, he began to search online for a medical centre in Ranchi itself that could provide his mother with the treatment she needed. His search led him to the newly established Ranchi Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (RCHRC).

During their visit to RCHRC, Rahul met with the team of doctors who recommended that Gita undergo some tests, including a Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC), to confirm the diagnosis. Her results revealed that while there was a lesion in her spine, the surrounding lymph nodes were non-cancerous. This news came as a delightful surprise and relief to Rahul, who had previously believed that his mother was suffering from cancer.

As with any caregiver, Rahul had a lot of questions about his mother’s condition and the available treatment options. However, the team at RCHRC patiently answered all his queries in a manner that he could understand. They reassured him that his mother’s lesion did not warrant cancer treatment. The doctor’s confidence helped ease the worries of both Rahul and his mother and, after in-depth counselling, they decided to proceed with the surgery.

Rahul admits that without the timely intervention and support from the RCHRC team, his mother would not have received the care she needed. “At no other hospital would I have been treated with so much respect. The doctors at RCHRC patiently answered all my questions and set my mind at ease,“ he adds.

Having visited many hospitals before, Gita  and Rahul found the atmosphere at RCHRC a refreshing change. The warm and welcoming environment immediately put them at ease and gave them a sense of reassurance.

After a successful surgery, Gita  is now on the road to recovery. She is grateful to the staff at RCHRC for the patience and compassion shown to her during her treatment. She continues to practise the physiotherapy exercises taught to her, which have been instrumental in her recovery journey. “I am truly grateful to RCHRC and the Tata Trusts for their efforts in providing me with quality medical care.
